The last NASCAR Grand National race on a dirt track before the modern era was held on September 30, 1970, at the half-mile State Fairgrounds Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina. Richard Petty won that race. For the next fifty years, the Cup Series competed exclusively on paved surfaces as asphalt and concrete racing came to define the professional stock car schedule.
Bristol Motor Speedway is a 0.533-mile concrete oval located in Bristol, Tennessee, with banking in the turns ranging from 24 to 28 degrees. The track is known for its tight confines, high banking, and the intensity of racing that results from its short lap distance. It has historically been one of the most popular venues on the NASCAR calendar, with peak capacity at 162,000 spectators and a record of 55 consecutive sellouts that ended in 2010.
In its standard paved configuration, the track features progressive banking and a two-lane pit road, the only venue on the current Cup schedule to retain that configuration. When converted to a dirt surface, the banking adjusts to a progressive system ranging from 16 to 19 degrees, reflecting the different grip characteristics and safety requirements of clay racing.
Bristol had actually experimented with temporary dirt surfaces as early as 2000 and 2001 under then-owner Larry Carrier, but those events were abandoned due to issues with the length and complexity of the cleanup process required to restore the track to its paved configuration.
In 2020, Bristol Motor Speedway announced that its spring Cup race would move to a temporary dirt surface starting in 2021, with the truck series also competing on dirt at the same event. The announcement came as part of a broader effort to address declining attendance and reinvigorate interest in the Bristol spring race, which had seen reduced crowd sizes compared to the night race.
The Food City Dirt Race, as it became known, marked the first NASCAR Cup Series race on a dirt surface since 1970 โ a gap of fifty-one years. The event drew significant attention for its novelty and for the skill set it demanded from drivers. Dirt racing experience โ accumulated in sprint cars, modifieds, and other grassroots categories โ became directly relevant to Cup competition in a way it had not been for half a century.
The race has been held on the dirt surface for multiple consecutive years before returning to the standard concrete configuration. The 2024 event returned to the paved surface after three years on dirt. The Bristol dirt race demonstrated both the interest in format experimentation that NASCAR has pursued in recent years and the operational complexity of converting a major permanent facility to a different racing surface.
The Bristol dirt surface produces fundamentally different racing dynamics compared to the concrete oval. Grip levels vary substantially depending on moisture content, the degree of rubber laid down over the course of a race day, and track temperature.
