Born in Montreal and raised in Toronto, Latifi is the son of Iranian-Canadian businessman Michael Latifi, CEO of Sofina Foods, Inc., and Marilena Latifi, whose family founded the dairy company Saputo Inc. He attended Crescent School, graduating in 2013, and was later named to the school’s Alumni Wall of Honour in 2021. Latifi began karting at the age of thirteen, spending four years in karting and eight years in junior formulae before entering Formula One at the age of 24, which he described as “definitely on the older side.”
Latifi began his single-seater career in the 2012 Italian Formula Three Championship with BVM, achieving one win and four podiums to finish seventh overall. He continued in Formula Three in 2013, competing in both the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and the British Formula 3 International Series with Carlin, finishing fifth in the latter. In 2014, Latifi competed in six different competitions, including a stint in Formula Renault 3.5 with Tech 1 Racing, where he secured a second-place finish at Jerez.
After several seasons in GP2—later known as the FIA Formula 2 Championship—with DAMS, Latifi finished runner-up to Nyck de Vries in 2019, having secured four wins, eight podiums, and four fastest laps. He served as a test driver for Renault in 2016 and 2017, and as a reserve driver for Force India—later Racing Point—in 2018. He joined the Williams Driver Academy in 2019, and signed for Williams in 2020 to partner George Russell.
Latifi’s Formula One debut came at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, where he finished 11th. He struggled for consistent results during his first season with Williams, but came close to scoring points on several occasions. In 2021, he achieved his maiden points finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing seventh after avoiding a first-lap collision. He followed this up with a points finish at the Belgian Grand Prix, where he finished ninth.
The 2022 season proved difficult for Latifi, with limited success despite a bright spot at the British Grand Prix where he qualified tenth. He scored his final Formula One points at the rain-affected Japanese Grand Prix, finishing ninth. He was replaced by Logan Sargeant at the conclusion of the season, ending his Formula One career.
Following his departure from Formula One, Latifi enrolled at London Business School in 2023 to study for a Master of Business Administration (MBA), completing the program in 2025. In the same year, he co-founded Leve Agave Spirit, a mid-strength agave spirit brand launched in the UK.
Throughout his career, Latifi also participated in other motorsport disciplines. He competed in the 2012 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge for Rehagen Racing, and made appearances in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain in 2014 and 2015.
