Patrick Galen Dempsey was born on January 13, 1966, in Lewiston, Maine, and grew up in Turner and Buckfield. He has two older sisters. His mother, Amanda (née Casson), was a school secretary, and his father, William, was an insurance salesman. Dempsey attended Leavitt Area High School, Buckfield High School and St. Dominic Regional High School.
At 17, Dempsey began his acting career with a role in a stage production of Torch Song Trilogy in 1983. He followed this with a tour in Brighton Beach Memoirs. His first major feature film role came at age 21 in In the Mood. He then co-starred in Meatballs III: Summer Job in 1987 and Can't Buy Me Love in the same year.

In January 2013, Dempsey’s company secured the winning bid to purchase Tully’s Coffee. He became the face of Silhouette eyewear in 2013, and appeared in promotional work for Vodafone Italy starting in 2017. In 2023, he helped raise funds for families of the Lewiston shooting victims by participating in a charity softball tournament.
In 2022, Dempsey was honored with a Disney Legend Award. He was named People magazine's 2023 "Sexiest Man Alive".
