The Porsche 992 GT3 R is the current-generation GT3 customer racing car based on the 992 model of the Porsche 911, unveiled in summer 2022 and making its global competition debut at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona. It replaced the 991 GT3 R and is powered by a naturally aspirated 4,194 cc flat-six boxer engine producing up to 421 kW, representing the continuation of Porsche's decades-long GT3 R programme for international GT3 customer racing.

Porsche's GT3 R lineage traces back through numerous generations of the 911 racing programme. The immediate predecessor, the 991 GT3 R introduced in 2018 for the 2019 season, was based on the 991.2 GT3 RS road car and produced approximately 405 kW from a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six. It featured a double-bubble roof, lengthened wheelbase, and extensive use of carbon-fibre composite body panels.

The 991 generation also featured the highly successful 911 RSR variants, which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMGTE Pro class on multiple occasions. The 2018 Le Mans saw Porsche GT Team finish 1-2 in LMGTE Pro, with the No. 92 wearing the famous Pink Pig livery as a tribute to the 917/20.

For the 992 generation, Porsche developed the GT3 R around the larger 4,194 cc displacement engine shared with the 991 RSR, increasing capacity over the 4.0-litre unit used in the 991 GT3 R. The car's power output of up to 421 kW is subject to balance of performance adjustment in each championship. Major technical evolutions from its predecessor include revised aerodynamics, updated chassis packaging, and electronic systems.

The 992 GT3 R made its global racing debut at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona. The opening race encountered difficulties: the car suffered from ABS and traction control problems that hindered its competitive performance at the debut round. Porsche addressed these issues in the subsequent months, issuing technical updates that resolved the electronic system calibration difficulties experienced at Daytona.

The car stabilised its performance across the 2023 season and entered international GT3 competition in IMSA, the GT World Challenge Europe, and other SRO-sanctioned championships.

In August 2025, Porsche announced a new updated version of the 992 GT3 R. The upgrade package included new front fender louvers, a revised rear wing Gurney flap, and modified rear axle kinematics. Further improvements were made to the cooling of the power steering system, new ceramic wheel bearings, and new cooling ducts for drive shafts. The updated car made its competitive debut at the 2025 12 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, where it finished second overall.

The Porsche 992 GT3 R is available in Assetto Corsa Competizione as part of the game's ongoing updates expanding its GT3 car roster. Its inclusion gives sim racers access to the current Porsche GT3 R specification, representing the 992 generation's technical package within the GT World Challenge racing environment that ACC replicates.

In sim racing, the 992 GT3 R carries forward Porsche's characteristic GT3 traits: rear-engine weight distribution placing emphasis on corner entry stability and rear traction management, the revving character of the naturally aspirated flat-six, and a high-downforce aerodynamic configuration suited to both sprint and endurance formats. Compared to the 991 GT3 R, the increased displacement of the 4.2-litre unit provides a broader torque band. The car features a six-speed sequential paddle-shift gearbox, as standardised for GT3 R competition machinery.

The broader 911 GT3 R programme has accumulated an exceptional competition record. At the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, Porsche and Manthey Racing claimed victories in 2000, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2018, and 2021. The car has also won the Spa 24 Hours in 2003, 2010, 2019, and 2020, the Bathurst 12 Hour in 2019 and 2024, the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2003, and the Petit Le Mans in 2015. The 997 GT3 RSR additionally set a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record for non-turbocharged cars at 7:07, driven by Sabine Schmitz.

The 992 GT3 R continues this heritage as Porsche's primary GT3 customer racing weapon for the mid-2020s, competing globally through Porsche's network of customer teams across IMSA, GT World Challenge Europe, DTM, and national GT3 championships.
