Prema Racing entered 2022 as the reigning FIA Formula 2 teams' champion, having secured their title at the penultimate race of the 2021 season in Saudi Arabia. The team had been a formidable force in the series since joining what was then GP2 in 2016, producing champions including Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher. Going into 2022, the team replaced its 2021 lineup — Oscar Piastri had been confirmed as Alpine F1 Team reserve driver and Robert Shwartzman had joined Scuderia Ferrari as a test driver — with Théo Pourchaire and Dennis Hauger.
Théo Pourchaire, a French driver from the Sauber/Alfa Romeo junior academy, arrived at Prema as one of the most highly regarded prospects on the grid. He had finished runner-up in the 2021 championship at ART Grand Prix and was seen as a title favourite.
Dennis Hauger, a Norwegian Red Bull Junior Team driver, joined Prema having won the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship. He was making his FIA Formula 2 debut with one of the most successful teams in the series.
The 2022 FIA Formula 2 season ran across fourteen rounds in support of the Formula 1 calendar. Felipe Drugovich, driving for MP Motorsport, proved to be the dominant force of the year, ultimately clinching the drivers' championship at Monza with three rounds to spare. This left Pourchaire, the team's most experienced driver, unable to mount a sustained title challenge despite securing three victories — at Bahrain, Monaco, and Hungary.
Pourchaire's season was disrupted by reliability issues early in the year, most notably an engine failure in qualifying at Jeddah that forced him to start from 21st and limited his points haul at that round. Despite recovering his form, he could never establish the consistent points margins needed to overhaul Drugovich.
Hauger performed creditably in his debut season, taking his first Formula 2 victory at Monaco's sprint race and adding further points finishes throughout the year. His learning curve was evident across the opening rounds but his pace improved significantly in the second half of the season.
Neither Pourchaire nor Hauger finished the season among the very top of the standings. Drugovich's dominance and MP Motorsport's consistency claimed both the drivers' and teams' titles, with Prema conceding the teams' championship they had won in 2021. Pourchaire finished the season in the runner-up positions overall, with Hauger further down the standings after a difficult debut campaign.
The 2022 season was significant for Prema as a rare year in which their FIA Formula 2 lineup did not deliver either the drivers' or teams' titles. The team had become so accustomed to championship success in junior formulae — winning titles with Leclerc, Schumacher, and Piastri in successive years — that any season without a championship was notable.
Pourchaire's continued development following 2022 kept him in contention for an Alfa Romeo Formula 1 seat. Hauger, for his part, established a strong foundation that informed his further development in subsequent seasons. The 2022 Prema F2 lineup remained an important node in the network of talent that defines the FIA junior pathway.
