Queensland Raceway, nicknamed “the paperclip,” is a motor racing circuit located at Willowbank in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. The 3.126 km (1.942 mi) circuit, running clockwise, is 12 m (13 yd) wide and features six corners, and has hosted Supercars Championship events until 2019, alongside drifting, club-level racing, and ride days. It is currently a FIA Grade 3 circuit, though events utilize sanctioning from Motorsport Australia, AASA, and Motorcycling Australia.

Queensland Raceway was designed by Tony Slattery, with input from car and motorcycle racing authorities including CAMS circuit expert Professor Rod Troutbeck. The circuit’s initial configuration and opening occurred in 1999. The track quickly became a popular venue for testing and racing, benefiting from excellent spectator viewing due to its flat layout and spectator mounds.

From its inception, Queensland Raceway was noted for its bumps, a characteristic that, while contributing to a challenging drive, was often criticized by competitors who preferred the more dynamic experience of undulating circuits like Phillip Island. The early years saw regular state and club-level racing, establishing the circuit as a key hub for motorsport in Queensland.

The circuit’s six corners, while not individually named in the provided corpus, contribute to its overall “paperclip” shape and present a mix of challenges for drivers. The flat layout, while advantageous for viewing, contributes to a perceived lack of excitement for competitors compared to more undulating tracks.

A significant resurfacing project was undertaken in late 2011, addressing the long-standing issue of the track’s bumps. This was initially planned for late 2010, but delayed due to flooding in south-east Queensland and subsequent logistical issues with equipment availability. In 2024, a new track configuration, the “Switchback” (2.50 km), was added, incorporating a new section connecting the interior straights and utilizing a variation of the Clubman circuit layout.

A major accident during a 2010 Mini Challenge support race to the V8 Supercar Championship Series sparked debate about circuit safety. While then-owner John Tetley maintained the track’s safety, driver Craig Lowndes suggested upgrades, including resurfacing, were overdue. This incident directly contributed to the eventual resurfacing completed before Christmas 2011. Further, five fatalities have occurred at the venue since its opening in 1999. Porsche Supercup driver Sean Edwards died in 2013 during testing, and club-racer Dennis Smith was killed at a sprint event in 2016. Two further deaths occurred in August 2017 when a driver and passenger were killed. In 2023, Shane Savage died after his car rolled.

Queensland Raceway has hosted a diverse range of motorsport events beyond its primary association with Supercars. Current events include the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, TA2 Racing Muscle Car Series, Australian Formula Ford Championship, GT World Challenge Australia, Australian Superbike Championship, and the Mustang Cup Australia. Historically, the circuit hosted the Queensland 500 (1999–2002), Australian Super Touring Championship, Formula 4 Australian Championship, and the SuperUtes Series. The Willowbank 300, a key event in the Queensland Endurance Championship, has been held annually at the circuit since 2014, alongside the Lakeside Park 300.

As of August 2025, official race lap records are maintained for various categories. In 2021, a change in ownership saw Tony Quinn take over the lease, management, and operations of Queensland Raceway, leading to significant investment in facility upgrades. The front straight was officially named “Dick Johnson Straight” on August 16, 2001, honoring five-time national champion and three-time Bathurst winner Dick Johnson, who was also a driving force behind the circuit’s development. Johnson made his last competitive V8 Supercar drive in the 2000 Queensland 500 with his son, Steve. The circuit remains a vital part of the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct, alongside Willowbank Raceway and other motorsport facilities.
