He is the 2019 FIA Formula 3 champion, the 2018 Toyota Racing Series champion, and served as a Ferrari reserve driver in Formula One between 2021 and 2024.

Shwartzman was born on 16 September 1999 in Tel Aviv, Israel, but was raised in Saint Petersburg and Italy. His father, Mikhail Shwartzman, died in 2020. Shwartzman described his 2020 Formula 2 season as the “toughest season of my life” following his father’s death.

Shwartzman began karting in 2004 at the age of four, claiming karting titles across Europe. In 2014, he graduated to single-seaters, partaking in six races of the Italian F4 Championship with Cram Motorsport. He raced full-time in Italian F4 with Mücke Motorsport in 2015, claiming three wins and finishing third in the standings with 212 points. He also competed in the inaugural ADAC Formula 4 championship that year, achieving six consecutive podiums and finishing fourth overall.

In 2016, Shwartzman moved to Formula Renault 2.0 with Josef Kaufmann Racing, claiming two victories in the Northern European Cup and finishing sixth in the standings. He continued in Formula Renault 2.0 in 2017 with R-ace GP, winning six races and finishing third in the driver standings. He then dominated the 2018 Toyota Racing Series, finishing all fifteen races in the top-five and securing the championship title.

Shwartzman tested with Prema Powerteam in 2017 and was subsequently included into the Ferrari Driver Academy. In 2018, he raced for Prema in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, taking his first win at Spielberg and ultimately finishing third in the standings, also claiming the rookie title. Following the merger of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and GP3 Series, Shwartzman raced for Prema in the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship. He won at Barcelona after a time penalty for Christian Lundgaard, and secured the championship title at Sochi.

Shwartzman continued with Prema Racing for the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, partnering Mick Schumacher. He claimed his first Formula 2 victory at the second Red Bull Ring round, dedicating the win to his late father. He also won at the Hungaroring. In 2021, Shwartzman again raced for Prema, securing wins in Bahrain and Silverstone. He finished the 2021 season as vice-champion with two wins and eight podiums.

Shwartzman made his debut in sportscar racing in 2023, partnering with Nicklas Nielsen and Alessio Rovera at AF Corse in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup. He also drove the Ferrari 499P Hypercar in Bahrain during the WEC rookie test, setting the fastest overall time. In 2024, he competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship for AF Corse, achieving a victory at the Lone Star Le Mans. He also tested for DS Penske in Formula E in both 2023 and 2024, setting the fastest time in the 2024 Berlin rookie test.

Shwartzman is competing full-time in the IndyCar Series for Prema Racing in 2025, alongside Callum Ilott. He qualified on pole position for the 2025 Indianapolis 500, becoming the first rookie driver to do so since Teo Fabi in 1983, and was named Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year (https://www.indycar.com/).
