The 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix was added to the Formula One calendar due to adjustments made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race was held behind closed doors, but authorities did give guest passes to local health workers and their families in recognition of their efforts during the pandemic. The ‘Outer Circuit’ layout, at 3.543 km, was significantly shorter than the usual ‘Grand Prix’ configuration, resulting in lap times under one minute – a rarity in Formula One, matched only by the 1974 French Grand Prix at Dijon-Prenois. Some drivers expressed concerns about the layout; Carlos Sainz Jr. and Max Verstappen feared potential safety issues due to the short lap distance and the risk of traffic during qualifying.
The driver lineups were largely unchanged from the season’s entry list, with three exceptions. Pietro Fittipaldi replaced Romain Grosjean at Haas following Grosjean’s accident in the previous race. Lewis Hamilton was unable to participate after testing positive for COVID-19, marking the first race he had missed since his debut in 2007. George Russell, a Mercedes protégé, replaced Hamilton, and Jack Aitken made his Formula One debut, taking Russell’s place at Williams. Lando Norris and Pietro Fittipaldi were required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding their power unit element quotas.
Valtteri Bottas qualified on pole position with a time of 53.377 seconds, setting a new record for the shortest pole position lap in Formula One history. George Russell qualified in second place, just 0.026 seconds behind Bottas.
George Russell took the lead at the start of the race, ahead of Valtteri Bottas. An incident on the first lap involved Carlos Leclerc, Sergio Pérez, and Max Verstappen, triggering a safety car period. Leclerc hit Pérez, causing the Mexican to spin and damaging Leclerc’s front left suspension. Verstappen slowed to avoid the barrier. After the restart, Russell maintained the lead, gradually extending his advantage. Pérez, after rejoining the race following the first-lap incident, steadily climbed through the field. Leclerc was later penalised three grid spots for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for his part in the incident.
A virtual safety car was deployed when Nicholas Latifi retired with an oil leak. During this period, Mercedes experienced pit stop errors. Radio communication issues led to confusion over which tyre crew was to prepare tyres for each driver. Russell was initially sent out with Bottas’s front tyres, and Bottas remained in the pit box for an extended period before being sent out with his original tyres. Russell was then forced to pit again. These errors dropped Bottas to fourth and Russell to fifth.
Russell, on fresher tyres, quickly began to regain positions, passing Bottas, Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon to move into second place. However, on lap 78, Russell suffered a rear left tyre puncture, forcing another pit stop. He recovered to finish ninth, earning his first World Drivers' Championship points and the fastest lap of the race, breaking the record for shortest fastest race lap duration set by Jody Scheckter at the 1974 French Grand Prix. Pérez won the race. Ocon finished second, and Stroll completed the podium. The stewards imposed a monetary fine on Mercedes for the pit stop errors.
As of 2026, this is Jack Aitken's only Formula One Grand Prix appearance, and Lance Stroll's podium remains the most recent podium achieved by a Canadian driver.
