He achieved a third-place finish at the Indianapolis 500 in 2023. He secured his first pole position in the IndyCar Series at Portland in 2024 .

Ferrucci was born in Woodbury, Connecticut, to Mike and Valerie Ferrucci. Growing up, he idolized Formula One driver Michael Schumacher.

Ferrucci began his open-wheel racing career in European Formula Three, competing in German and British Formula Three in 2014. He achieved two wins and a pole position in British Formula 3 with Fortec Motorsport. In 2015, he finished third overall in the Toyota Racing Series, earning one win at Manfeild and five other podium finishes.

In 2019, Ferrucci contested a full season in the IndyCar Series with Dale Coyne Racing, recording a ninth-place finish at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and a seventh-place finish at the Indianapolis 500, earning Rookie of the Year honors. He achieved his best IndyCar finish to date, fourth, at Texas Motor Speedway later that season.

Ferrucci continued to race with Dale Coyne Racing in 2020, achieving five top-five finishes and finishing thirteenth in the points standings, including a fourth-place result at the Indianapolis 500. In 2023, Ferrucci returned to IndyCar full-time with A. J. Foyt Racing, finishing third in the Indy 500 – the best result for the team since 2000.

During the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship season, Ferrucci was banned from four races and fined €60,000 after deliberately making contact with his teammate Arjun Maini at Silverstone. He was also disqualified from the Sprint Race results for forcing Maini off the track, and fined an additional €6,000 for a separate infraction. His attempt to run a "Make America Great Again" livery was blocked by the FIA due to their political slogans policy. Following the incident, Ferrucci was fired by Trident, leading to a legal dispute over unpaid funds, resulting in an Italian court ordering him to pay Trident €502,000, plus interest and legal fees.

Ferrucci made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in 2021, piloting the No. 26 Toyota Supra for Sam Hunt Racing in a 20-race schedule. He also returned to the team for races at Pocono and the Indianapolis Road Course in 2022. In January 2021, Ferrucci made his midget car racing debut in the Chili Bowl, though he failed to finish his qualifying race.

Ferrucci served as a test and reserve driver for the Haas F1 Team in 2016, 2017, and 2018, gaining experience in Formula One machinery with a test at Silverstone.
