The current layout measures approximately 5.891 km (3.660 mi) and features 18 turns. Its most celebrated sequence is the Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex, a rapid left-right-left-right cascade taken at very high speed and generating lateral g-forces exceeding 5g, which represents one of the most demanding sections of any circuit on the MotoGP calendar. The circuit's pit straight is named the Hamilton Straight, renamed in December 2020 in recognition of Lewis Hamilton's achievements in Formula One.
The circuit sits astride the Northamptonshire-Buckinghamshire border and was originally demarcated by runways and perimeter roads of the airfield. A major redesign between 1990 and 1991 transformed the ultra-fast original layout into a more technical track, adding the Luffield infield section and reshaping Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel into its current form.
Grand Prix motorcycle racing's connection to Silverstone dates to 1977. The Isle of Man TT had by then been increasingly boycotted by top riders and was removed from the World Championship calendar, with Silverstone chosen as the new home of the British round. The inaugural event on 14 August 1977 was won by Pat Hennen on a Suzuki RG500, ahead of Steve Baker's Yamaha.
The 1979 British motorcycle Grand Prix produced one of the closest finishes in Grand Prix racing history. Reigning champion Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene traded the lead repeatedly throughout the 28-lap race; Roberts won for the second consecutive year, edging Sheene by three-hundredths of a second.
Silverstone hosted the British Grand Prix through 1986 before losing it temporarily. The event returned in 2010 for MotoGP after a 24-year absence. Jorge Lorenzo dominated that race on a Fiat Yamaha, winning by nearly seven seconds from Andrea Dovizioso's Repsol Honda.
In 2011, the Repsol Hondas dominated in wet conditions, with Casey Stoner beating Andrea Dovizioso by more than 15 seconds. The 2012 race went to Lorenzo again; the 2013 edition produced a compelling duel in which Lorenzo and Marc Marquez swapped the lead multiple times through the final corners, with Lorenzo making the decisive pass to win. Marquez won the 2014 race, overtaking Lorenzo with three laps remaining.
The 2020 British motorcycle Grand Prix was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2022 onward, MotoGP adopted the same start-finish configuration used by Formula One, with the start line moved to the Hamilton Straight and Abbey becoming Turn 1.
Silverstone's combination of high-speed sections, technical infield areas and unpredictable English weather has produced a consistently challenging event for MotoGP riders. The Hangar Straight, where Formula One cars reach approximately 325 km/h, provides a major braking zone into Stowe. The circuit's exposure on the flat Northamptonshire plain makes it susceptible to rapid weather changes mid-race, adding a strategic dimension that has shaped numerous British Grand Prix outcomes.
Silverstone hosted the first race of the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle World Championship's British round that replaced the Isle of Man TT in 1977, establishing itself as the permanent home of British motorcycle Grand Prix racing for the modern era. The circuit's long Formula One history — including hosting the very first World Championship Grand Prix in 1950 — gives it a broader motorsport significance, and it routinely attracts some of the largest race crowds of the MotoGP season.
