Sparco was established in Italy in 1977 and has remained under Italian ownership throughout its history. Its founding coincided directly with a significant regulatory intervention by the FIA, which that same year tightened its safety requirements for driver clothing in response to the frequency and severity of fire-related injuries in racing. The cotton racing suits then in common use were not fireproof and could not comply with the new regulations.
Sparco's solution — its first commercial product — was a fireproof racing suit capable of withstanding eleven seconds of direct flame exposure, an absolute record for the time. The suit exceeded the requirements of the new FIA 8856-2000 standard and provided teams with a practical, certifiable alternative to non-compliant cotton gear. The company continued to improve its fire-resistance technology annually in the years that followed, establishing a foundation of technical credibility in the motorsport safety market.
In 2009, Aldino Bellazzini acquired a majority stake in Sparco and assumed the role of Chairman. His appointment triggered a sustained phase of technical development within the company. These improvements led to Sparco obtaining ISO/TS16949:09 quality certification in 2010, a standard applied to automotive production and supply chain quality management.
A prominent product outcome of this period was the McLaren SP16+, a race suit developed in collaboration with McLaren. The suit is at least ten percent lighter than any comparable product on the market and has been worn by McLaren Formula One drivers since 2016.
Sparco's product catalogue extends well beyond traditional safety equipment. The company also manufactures simulation cockpits, gaming chairs, pedals, shift knobs, and performance apparel — reflecting the company's recognition that the boundary between professional motorsport and sim racing has become commercially significant. Sparco branded alloy wheels are produced under licence by OZ Group.
Sparco's history in Formula One is extensive. Current supply partnerships in the sport include Red Bull Racing and Williams. The company's historical F1 client list spans much of the grid across several decades and includes Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Benetton, Jordan Grand Prix, Prost Grand Prix, Arrows, Minardi, Alfa Romeo Racing, Toyota Racing, Midland F1 Racing, Super Aguri F1, Spyker F1, Forti, MasterCard Lola, Team Lotus (2010–11) and its successor Caterham F1 Team, and Virgin Racing.
In Formula 2, Sparco currently works with Campos Racing and Trident Motorsport. In IndyCar, the company supplies Chip Ganassi Racing, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Andretti Global, and Dreyer and Reinbold Racing. In NASCAR, current partners include Kaulig Racing, Rick Ware Racing, Richard Childress Racing, and Front Row Motorsports.
The company also sponsors events in rally competition and single-seater series, maintaining a broad presence across the global racing calendar.
Sparco's longevity since 1977 — combined with its role in defining the market for compliant fireproof racewear at a time when the FIA was restructuring safety standards — has made it a foundational supplier in motorsport.
