Strakka-Dome S103

The Strakka-Dome S103 is a Le Mans Prototype built to ACO/FIA LMP2 regulations, developed through a partnership between British endurance team Strakka Racing and Japanese manufacturer Dome Co. Ltd. Originally eligible for the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series, and the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, the car endured a troubled development period before making its competition debut in 2015, after which it was shelved in favour of the Gibson 015S.

Dome Co. Ltd announced development of the S103 in May 2013, releasing initial concept sketches online. The car was designed to meet both the 2014 LMP1 and LMP2 Technical regulations and was developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics alongside a 50% scale wind tunnel model at the Furyusha Wind Tunnel in Japan.

On 27 November 2013, Dome and Strakka Racing entered a long-term partnership to jointly develop, market, and race the car in LMP2 configuration, at which point it became known as the Strakka-Dome S103. The car was announced to be powered by the Nissan VK45 4.5-litre V8 engine.

The first shakedown took place on 24 March 2014 at Turweston Aerodrome, with Jonny Kane and Danny Watts at the wheel. The original intended race debut was the 2014 6 Hours of Silverstone, the opening round of that year's FIA World Endurance Championship.

Despite completing its shakedown, the S103 was unable to race in 2014. Team principal Nick Levantis announced on 15 April 2014 that the car would miss the first two rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship due to teething problems and insufficient running. A planned debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans was subsequently cancelled owing to extensive revisions required to the rear geometry and long lead times for the necessary parts.

A final attempt to debut at the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo was also abandoned, this time due to a homologation issue with the car's headrest โ€” a frustrating outcome given that the car had performed well in a preparation test at the Hungaroring, covering 3,500 km.

Prior to its delayed competition debut, the S103 completed over 4,000 km of testing at Motorland Aragon. The car was officially launched at the FIA WEC Prologue at Circuit Paul Ricard on 26 March 2015.

On its debut at the 2015 6 Hours of Silverstone, the car finished fourth on the road. It was subsequently elevated to third place after the number 30 Tequila Patron ESM car, which had originally finished third, failed post-race scrutineering. At the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps the car qualified seventh and finished fifth.

Following the 2015 season, the car was shelved in favour of the Gibson 015S. Strakka Racing intended to use the S103 as a developmental mule for a proposed LMP1 programme for 2017, but that project was ultimately cancelled and the car never returned to competition.

Following the 2017 LMP2 regulation changes that rendered the S103 ineligible for top-tier endurance racing, a separate effort began to convert the Dome S103 into the Strakka S103B for use in the LMP1 class. A tightly budgeted two-year programme was proposed, with design work and engine supply discussions progressing before the project was cancelled. The primary reasons cited were the escalating costs of logistics within the World Endurance Championship and fuel flow regulations in LMP1 that required expensive fuel metering systems.

Following the 2017 rule changes for the LMP2 class, the Strakka-Dome S103 lost eligibility for the FIA World Endurance Championship, the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, and the European Le Mans Series. It retained eligibility for the LMP2-Am category of the Asian Le Mans Series.
