Suzuki Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational mobility manufacturer headquartered in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, producing automobiles, motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), outboard marine engines, and a variety of small internal combustion engines. In 2016, Suzuki was the eleventh biggest automaker by production worldwide, with over 45,000 employees and 35 production facilities in 23 countries, distributing to 192 countries.

In 1909, Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Works in Hamamatsu, Japan, initially focused on building weaving looms for the silk industry. For thirty years, the company focused on the development and production of these machines. In 1929, Michio Suzuki invented a new type of weaving machine, which was exported overseas. Despite the success of the looms, Suzuki sought diversification, considering the production of a small car in 1937, completing several prototypes with a 13 horsepower, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine. Production plans were halted by World War II, with the government deeming civilian passenger cars "non-essential."

Following the war, Suzuki returned to manufacturing, initially producing looms before turning to motorized bicycles. In 1952, the “Power Free” was introduced, a bicycle fitted with a 36cc, one horsepower, two-stroke engine, offering pedal assistance or engine-only power. The patent office provided a financial subsidy for continued motorcycle engineering research. By 1954, Suzuki was producing 6,000 motorcycles per month, leading to the company’s official renaming to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. The 1955 Suzulight, featuring front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering, marked the company’s entry into automobile production.

From 1981 to 1982, Suzuki played a prominent role in establishing Maruti Suzuki, the first largely foreign-owned car company in India, eventually acquiring a majority stake by 2007. In 1998, Suzuki and General Motors formed a strategic alliance, with GM initially acquiring a 10% stake in Suzuki. The 1998 Suzuki Hayabusa, with its 1299 cc engine, became known as the fastest production motorcycle of its time. In 2000, Suzuki achieved 30 million cumulative automobile sales worldwide. In 2006, Suzuki sold over 100,000 vehicles in the United States.

In 1962, Ernst Degner, having defected from MZ, secured Suzuki’s first victory in the 50cc Grand Prix motorcycle racing at the Isle of Man TT. In 1963, Mitsuo Itoh became the first Japanese rider to win the Isle of Man TT, also in the 50cc class, riding a Suzuki. In 1976, Barry Sheene won the 500cc World Championship for Suzuki, a feat he repeated in 1977. A 1988 Consumer Reports article alleging the Suzuki Samurai 4x4 was prone to rolling over led to a lengthy legal battle, settled in 2004. In November 2012, Suzuki filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, discontinuing automobile sales there and focusing on motorcycles, ATVs, and marine equipment.

Michio Suzuki, the founder of the company, died in December 2024. Osamu Suzuki, who led the company from 1977 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2015, retired as Chairman in June 2021, handing over to his son, Toshihiro.

Suzuki has diversified into various other areas, including outboard marine engines, wheelchairs, and general-purpose engines. They also have a significant presence in the ATV market, with models like the QuadRunner and QuadSport. Suzuki has also engaged in joint ventures and partnerships, including with Volkswagen (2009-2015) and Toyota (since 2019).

Suzuki motorcycles have achieved 94 victories at the Isle of Man TT Races. The 1974 RE5 rotary engine motorcycle and the 1998 Hayabusa are included in the JSAE 240 Landmarks of Japanese Automotive Technology. Several Suzuki models have received Good Design Awards from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, including the Gemma scooter and the Skywave series.
