Tech3

Tech3 is a French motorcycle racing team that has competed at the highest level of Grand Prix motorcycle racing for over three decades. Founded in 1990 by ex-racer Hervé Poncharal, engineer Guy Coulon, and Bernard Martignac, the team built a long career as Yamaha's leading satellite outfit before pivoting to a partnership with KTM and subsequently Gas Gas from the late 2010s. In 2025, a consortium led by former Formula One team principal Guenther Steiner acquired the team, marking the start of a new ownership era from 2026.

Tech3 began in the 250 cc class in 1990, using Honda and Suzuki machinery. By the end of the decade the team achieved significant results. In the 2000 season, riders Olivier Jacque and Shinya Nakano finished first and second respectively in the 250 cc World Championship — the team's most significant results in the intermediate class and a defining moment in establishing Tech3 as a serious outfit.

In 1999, Tech3 partnered with Yamaha, and by 2001 the full operation had moved to the MotoGP premier class with Jacque and Nakano on the YZR500. The team received the YZR-M1 towards the end of 2002, accelerating its development. Tech3 established itself over nearly two decades as one of the most consistent independent outfits in MotoGP, placing regularly among the leading non-factory teams.

The 2006 and 2007 seasons saw the team run on Dunlop tyres before returning to Michelin in 2008. That year's rider lineup paired reigning two-time Superbike World Champion James Toseland with two-time champion Colin Edwards, forming a highly credentialled pairing. In 2010, Ben Spies replaced Toseland and enjoyed a strong debut season, finishing sixth in the championship. The team also expanded that year into the newly created Moto2 category.

Ahead of 2011, Spies was promoted to the factory Yamaha team, replaced by Cal Crutchlow. The team cycled through notable riders in subsequent seasons including Andrea Dovizioso and Bradley Smith before closing its Yamaha chapter after the 2018 season.

In 2019, Tech3 ended its Yamaha relationship and became the official satellite team for KTM, a significant strategic shift aligning the team with KTM's expanding MotoGP programme. The transition also affected the team's Moto2 entry, which switched to KTM machinery, before KTM withdrew from Moto2 after 2019 and Tech3 moved into Moto3 for 2020 instead.

The 2020 season brought a historic milestone. Miguel Oliveira gave Tech3 and KTM their first-ever premier-class victory at the Styrian Grand Prix in Austria, on KTM's home soil, in the team's 373rd start in the class. Oliveira repeated the feat at the final race of the year in Portugal, his home Grand Prix.

In mid-2022, Tech3 announced a partnership with Gas Gas, KTM's Spanish sister brand. From 2023 the team adopted Gas Gas's crimson red livery. After competing under the Gas Gas name for two seasons, Tech3 announced in June 2024 that it would revert to a factory KTM alignment and rebrand as Red Bull KTM Tech3 for 2025. The team signed Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales as its riders for that season.

In 2025, a consortium led by Guenther Steiner — the former Haas Formula One team principal — acquired full ownership of Tech3. The deal signalled a new commercial and sporting direction for the team beginning in 2026, though the precise structure of the new era's manufacturer arrangement was established as part of the transition.

Tech3's longevity as an independent operator, its 250 cc title success, its first premier-class win with Oliveira, and its capacity to attract quality riders across multiple manufacturer partnerships mark it as one of the most durable teams in Grand Prix motorcycle racing history.
