Poncharal established the team alongside engineer Guy Coulon and Bernard Martignac, initially competing in the 250 cc class with Honda and Suzuki machinery. The team's greatest success in the smaller class came at the turn of the century: in 2000, riders Olivier Jacque and Shinya Nakano finished first and second respectively in the 250 cc World Championship, giving Tech3 a constructors' triumph.
Tech3 began its association with Yamaha in 1999 and moved its entire operation to the premier class in 2001 with Jacque and Nakano on the YZR500. Towards the end of the 2002 season the team received the Yamaha YZR-M1, the factory's premier four-stroke machine.
Over nearly twenty years as Yamaha's satellite team, Tech3 established itself as one of the leading independent outfits in MotoGP, regularly placing non-factory riders in positions that exceeded expectations. The team's rider lineups across the Yamaha era included James Toseland, Colin Edwards, Ben Spies, Cal Crutchlow, Andrea Dovizioso, Bradley Smith, and Pol Espargaró. Spies delivered a particularly strong debut season in 2010, finishing sixth in the championship.
The team also expanded into Moto2 when that class was introduced in 2010, fielding Yuki Takahashi and Raffaele De Rosa on Tech3-chassised Honda-powered bikes.
In 2019, Tech3 ended its long Yamaha relationship and became KTM's official satellite team, also switching its Moto2 programme to KTM machinery. When KTM withdrew from Moto2 after the 2019 season, Tech3 moved into the Moto3 class for 2020 using KTM-powered machinery.
The new partnership quickly delivered results. In 2020, Tech3 recorded their first-ever premier-class victory in their 373rd start when Miguel Oliveira won the Styrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring — KTM's home circuit. Oliveira repeated the achievement at the season finale in Portugal, his home race.
In mid-2022, Tech3 announced a partnership with Gas Gas, a Spanish motorcycle brand belonging to the KTM group. From 2023 the team raced under Gas Gas colours in MotoGP, adopting the brand's crimson red livery.
In June 2024, Tech3 announced it would revert to factory KTM affiliation, rebranded as Red Bull KTM Tech3. The team signed Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales as their riders for 2025.
In 2025, a consortium led by Guenther Steiner — best known as the founding team principal of the Haas Formula 1 team — acquired full ownership of Tech3. The acquisition marked a new chapter for the team, with the Steiner-led ownership intending to chart a new direction beginning from the 2026 season.
Tech3's longevity in the paddock, spanning from the 250 cc era through the 500 cc class and into MotoGP, reflects the team's ability to adapt commercially and technically across multiple manufacturer partnerships. Its capacity to develop talented riders and remain competitive as an independent satellite outfit across three decades establishes Tech3 among the most enduring institutions in Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
