Blomqvist was born in the United Kingdom before moving to New Zealand with his mother following his parents’ separation. He spent most of his childhood in New Zealand before relocating to Europe to pursue a racing career, initially to Sweden with his father and later to the United Kingdom to live with family friends. He holds citizenships of New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Sweden, and races under the British flag, though he identifies as a New Zealander. He currently resides in Monaco.
Blomqvist began his racing career in karting, winning eight Championship titles in New Zealand between 2003 and 2008. In 2009, at the age of fifteen, he moved to Europe to compete in Formula Renault 2.0 Sweden, achieving five podium finishes and one victory from fourteen races, finishing third in the standings. He also finished third in the Formula Renault NEZ Championship. Later that year, having secured special permission to race due to his age, he won both races of the Formula Renault UK Winter Series at Rockingham Motor Speedway.
In 2010, Blomqvist raced for Fortec Motorsport in the full Formula Renault UK season, securing twelve podiums and becoming the youngest ever champion in the series’ history at the age of 16, surpassing Lewis Hamilton’s previous record of 18. He also secured third place at the Macau Grand Prix, driving for Eurointernational in the Formula BMW Pacific race.
Blomqvist competed in the German F3 championship in 2011 with Performance Racing, achieving third in the championship before a crash at EuroSpeedway Lausitz broke his back, requiring months of recuperation. Despite the injury, he continued to race in 2012, achieving fifth in the German F3 Championship and seventh in both the F3 Euroseries and the FIA European Formula 3 Championship, despite competing with a team new to Formula 3.
In 2014, driving for Carlin, Blomqvist finished second in the European Formula 3 Championship, despite incurring engine change penalties. He entered the Macau Grand Prix driving for Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, but a collision with Esteban Ocon on the first lap ended his race.
In 2015, Blomqvist secured a BMW DTM drive with RBM Team, becoming the youngest BMW driver to win a race in his first season, at Oschersleben. He continued with RBM Team in 2016, finishing sixth in the Drivers' Championship, the youngest driver in the top ten. He remained with BMW and Team RBR in 2017.
During the 2013 Macau Grand Prix, Blomqvist qualified sixth, but was forced to start at the back of the grid for the final race after a collision with Harry Tincknell during the qualifying race. He subsequently charged through the 28-car field to finish eighth.
In his first IndyCar race at Toronto in 2023, Blomqvist crashed out on the first lap after being pushed into the wall by Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jack Harvey.
In 2018, Blomqvist won the 24 Hours of Spa driving a BMW M6 GT3 for Team Walkenhorst Motorsport, alongside Philipp Eng and Christian Krognes. He also made a one-off appearance in the 2019 IMSA SportsCar Championship at Watkins Glen International, finishing eighth in the GT Le Mans category.
Blomqvist competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2021 with Jota Sport, finishing second in the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and collecting four podiums throughout the season. He returned to the series in 2023 with United Autosports, replacing Alex Lynn.
Blomqvist joined Meyer Shank Racing for the 2022 IMSA SportsCar Championship, driving the Acura ARX-05 alongside Oliver Jarvis. He secured wins at the Rolex 24 and Road Atlanta, ultimately winning the championship title. He was retained by Meyer Shank Racing for the 2023 season, driving the new Acura ARX-06 in the GTP class, partnering with Colin Braun. They won the Rolex 24 and the Chevrolet Sports Car Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In 2024, despite Meyer Shank’s departure from IMSA, Blomqvist signed on to compete in the Michelin Endurance Cup races with Whelen Engineering Action Express Racing.
Blomqvist participated in the 2017–18 Formula E season with MS&AD Andretti Formula E, making his debut at the Marrakesh ePrix. He was later replaced by Stéphane Sarrazin for the final four races of the season. He returned to the series for the 2019 Berlin ePrix as a TV pundit and raced in the final two races of the 2019–20 season, replacing James Calado. He secured a full-time seat at NIO 333 FE Team for the 2020–21 Formula E World Championship, finishing last in the constructors' championship. He served as a reserve driver for Envision Racing in the 2021–22 season.
Following his successful 2022 IMSA season, Blomqvist tested a Meyer Shank Racing IndyCar in 2022. He made his IndyCar debut in 2023 at Toronto, substituting for Simon Pagenaud. He was announced as a full-time driver for Meyer Shank Racing for the 2024 IndyCar Series, partnering Felix Rosenqvist, but his season was cut short after a crash at the Indianapolis 500, leading to his replacement by Hélio Castroneves and then David Malukas.
