Earl Gilmore created the event at his Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles, where it ran from 1934 through 1950. After Gilmore Stadium's closure the race moved to a succession of southern California venues, ultimately settling at its current home at Ventura Raceway.
The race has traditionally been a dirt track event. During the early 2000s it migrated temporarily to asphalt, but returned to its dirt roots in 2012, restoring its connection to the grassroots midget racing traditions that defined the event from the outset.
J. C. Agajanian took over promotion in 1955, bringing continuity that has lasted to the present day. His son Cary now carries on the family stewardship. The feature distance in the modern era runs 98 laps, a number that pays deliberate homage to Agajanian's personal racing number, which he used on his own racecars throughout his career as a car owner.
The Turkey Night Grand Prix has long served as the traditional season-ending event for midget and sprint car racing in North America. Because the major American auto racing series complete their seasons before Thanksgiving, headline drivers are free to compete without schedule conflicts, making the event a genuine showdown of talent from multiple disciplines.
In the twenty-first century the California racing calendar around Thanksgiving expanded considerably. A broader California Midget Swing now spans roughly sixteen days across two weeks, encompassing events at Placerville Speedway, Plaza Park in Visalia, Merced County Fairgrounds, Tulare, and Kern Raceway, with the Turkey Night Grand Prix as the capstone. The expansion led promoters in 2021 to shift the Turkey Night away from Thanksgiving night itself, moving to a two-day format on the Friday and Saturday following the holiday, with practice and support races on Friday and heat races plus the feature on Saturday.
The race is considered one of three major midget events of the year alongside the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Bryan Clauson Classic at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The event draws drivers from across the American open-wheel spectrum. Past competitors include IndyCar and NASCAR alumni such as Parnelli Jones, A. J. Foyt, Johnnie Parsons, Bill Vukovich, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, J. J. Yeley, Jason Leffler, Kasey Kahne, and Kyle Larson, underlining the race's standing as a proving ground where elite talent competes on equal terms with midget specialists.
The 2021 edition produced a landmark moment in the race's history. Kaylee Bryson qualified fastest to become the first woman to claim the pole position in the event's 80-year history. Her Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian teammate Taylor Reimer qualified second, making it the first time two women had started first and second in USAC National Midget competition. Bryson led the opening 17 laps, becoming the first woman to lead the Turkey Night Grand Prix.

The race was suspended during World War II, with no events held in 1942, 1943, or 1944. In 2020 California state pandemic restrictions prevented the race from taking place, the only other interruption in the event's nine-decade history.
