The team's origins lie in a joint venture established in 1987 between Tom Walkinshaw and Holden to form Holden Special Vehicles, with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) responsible for Holden's motorsport programme. TWR designed the Holden VL Commodore SS Group A SV, homologated in August 1988. For the 1988 and 1989 seasons the racing programme was contracted to Perkins Engineering; TWR ran the full operation in-house from 1990, when longtime TWR driver Win Percy moved to Melbourne as both driver and team manager.
In the team's first full season under the HRT banner in 1990, Percy recruited Allan Grice to co-drive at Bathurst despite objections from Holden and Tom Walkinshaw. Grice handled the bulk of the driving and took an unexpected victory, the team's first Bathurst 1000 win. A second-place finish followed at the 1991 Bathurst 1000 with Percy and Grice.
Peter Brock joined the team in 1994, bringing Mobil and NGK sponsorship. His first ATCC round win, at Eastern Creek in 1994, was HRT's maiden round victory. Craig Lowndes drove the second endurance car at Bathurst that year and was retained for the 1995 season onwards. The 1996 season was the team's most dominant in the ATCC era: Lowndes won the drivers' championship, and he and Greg Murphy took victory in both the Sandown 500 and the Bathurst 1000.
The team celebrated its 50th round win in 2005 when Todd Kelly triumphed at the V8 Supercars China Round at Shanghai International Circuit. Mark Skaife and Todd Kelly won the Bathurst 1000 that same year.
Tom Walkinshaw Racing collapsed in early 2003 and Holden purchased the team, quickly selling it to Mark Skaife as manufacturers were prohibited from owning teams. Skaife sold his 50% share to Tom Walkinshaw in December 2008. In 2017 the Holden factory backing was transferred to Triple Eight Race Engineering, and the team raced under the Mobil 1 HSV Racing name with Scott Pye replacing Garth Tander.
In January 2018 the team was rebranded Walkinshaw Andretti United after Andretti Autosport acquired a 37.5% shareholding and United Autosports a 25% stake. In 2022 the team confirmed a switch from Holden to Ford machinery, fielding Mustangs from the 2023 season with both Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert. For 2026 the team switched to Toyota GR Supras and was renamed Walkinshaw TWG Racing after United Autosports sold its stake and Andretti Autosport was taken over by TWG Motorsports.
The team's seven drivers' championship titles came through Craig Lowndes (1996), Craig Lowndes (1998 and 1999 via substitute entries), Mark Skaife (2000, 2001, 2002), and Garth Tander. The Bathurst 1000 victories include the unexpected 1990 triumph under Win Percy, the 1996, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2009, and 2011 editions, and several endurance wins in combination with its satellite entries. Chaz Mostert won the 2025 Supercars Championship with the team, taking four wins during the season.
Notable drivers to have represented the team include Peter Brock, Craig Lowndes, Greg Murphy, Mark Skaife, Garth Tander, James Courtney, Chaz Mostert, and Ryan Wood. James Courtney, who joined in 2011, was with the team for nine years before departing in 2019. Ryan Wood replaced Nick Percat for the 2024 season and scored his first Supercars win in Perth in 2025.
