Andretti is the younger brother of the late NASCAR racer John Andretti and a nephew of Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti. His father, the late Aldo Andretti, was Mario's twin brother and retired from racing after nearly dying in an accident. Adam Andretti is a first cousin to IndyCar champion Michael Andretti and Jeff Andretti, and a first cousin once removed to IndyCar driver Marco Andretti. He married Tabitha Eve on 3 November 2007 and, as of 2017, the couple resided in Brownsburg, Indiana. Andretti is a graduate of the Skip Barber Racing School.
Andretti began racing in 1994 at age fifteen, helped by his brother John, who secured him a ride in the half-scale Mini Cup Stock Car series. He drove for Terry Lingner of Lingner Group Productions at the Velodrome in Indianapolis, winning four races in 1995 and finishing fourth in the series championship. He subsequently raced karts; his brother Mark purchased him a 125cc shifter kart and the two competed in the SKUSA series for about two years. In 1998 Andretti finished second at the Formula C World Karting Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, and also ran in the 24 Hours of Daytona, which the corpus describes as sponsored by the Grand American Road Racing Association.
In 2000 he drove the No. 12 car in the short-lived United States Formula 3 Championship for Duesenberg Brothers Racing, winning one race and finishing third in the points championship. He competed in NASCAR's Featherlite Southwest Series in 2001 and 2002. In 2003 he drove a Corvette at Sebring Raceway in the SPEED World Challenge Series, and in 2004 he entered the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
Andretti made his Indy Pro Series debut on 9 September 2007 at Chicagoland Speedway. His race ended in an altercation with IndyCar veteran Jimmy Kite. He announced plans for a full 2008 Indy Pro Series season with the new FuZion Autosport team, but the team and Andretti did not participate in any league test sessions or races.
In 2014 Andretti became the first member of the Andretti family to compete in the Trans-Am Series, racing regularly in the TA2 class. He has driven a Camaro, a Mustang, and a Challenger in the series, recording six wins and finishing second in points on two occasions.
In December 2017 Andretti joined UFD Racing for his Stadium Super Trucks debut at Lake Elsinore Diamond in the No. 44 truck. He failed to qualify for the first feature race and finished twelfth in the second feature after a mechanical failure on lap eight. He returned to SST in August 2018 at Road America, finishing eleventh and ninth in the two rounds.
On 12 February 2026 it was announced that Andretti would drive select races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the No. 5 Toyota for Tricon Garage.
Andretti has also served as a racing instructor for Road & Track magazine and for driving schools including the Richard Petty Driving Experience.
