Oreca 07

section:car
The Oreca 07 is a Le Mans Prototype constructed by French manufacturer Oreca to compete under the 2017 FIA/ACO LMP2 regulations. Since its competitive debut at the 2017 24 Hours of Daytona, the chassis has become the dominant platform in its class, utilized by nearly all teams in series featuring LMP2 machinery.

The development of the Oreca 07 was an evolution of its predecessor, the Oreca 05. Oreca designed the 05 with the 2017 technical regulations in mind, allowing the manufacturer to base the 07 on the existing platform to maximize performance through efficient energy and resource usage. This strategy provided a financial path for teams to update their existing Oreca 05 chassis to the 07 specification. The design process prioritized performance optimization over the development of a new monocoque, as the 07 chassis remains largely based on the 05.

The Oreca 07 is powered by a Gibson GK428 V8 engine, which initially produced 600 hp (450 kW). In 2020, following the introduction of Le Mans Hypercar regulations, the power output was reduced by 60 hp. The car conducted its initial factory shakedown in October 2016 at Circuit Paul Ricard. Beyond the standard LMP2 configuration, the chassis has served as the base for several manufacturer-specific variations, including the Acura ARX-05 DPi, which utilizes a 3.5-litre Acura AR35TT twin-turbocharged V6 and bespoke bodywork.

The Oreca 07 debuted in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at the 2017 24 Hours of Daytona, followed by its FIA World Endurance Championship debut at the 6 Hours of Silverstone). It quickly established itself as the most dominant car in the LMP2 class. By 2025, Oreca had produced over 140 units of the 07, including rebadged versions and variations for other programs.

The chassis has seen success under various names and brands:

Alpine A470: A branded version used by Signatech Alpine, which won the 2018–19 FIA World Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams.

Aurus 01: A rebranded 07 used by G-Drive Racing in the European Le Mans Series, securing four victories between 2019 and 2021.

Acura ARX-05: A DPi variant campaigned by Team Penske, which won IMSA titles in 2019 and 2020, and was later run by Wayne Taylor Racing and Meyer Shank Racing.

Rebellion R13 / Alpine A480: An LMP1/Hypercar variant that competed for overall FIA World Endurance Championship titles, finishing second overall in the championship standings across four seasons.

The performance advantage of the Oreca 07 during its debut season led to a specific regulatory intervention by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest. Following the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans, the sheer performance difference between the 07 and its competitors prompted the ACO to allow rival brands—Dallara, Ligier, and Riley/Multimatic—to implement extensive upgrade packages to match the Oreca's pace. During this process, Oreca was prevented from implementing similar performance upgrades to the 07.

The Oreca 07's reliability and performance led to it becoming the de facto choice for LMP2 competitors, frequently causing teams to switch from rival manufacturers to the Oreca platform. Its design served as the foundation for the Rebellion R13, which was later grandfathered into the Hypercar class as the Alpine A480. The Acura ARX-05 DPi program also relied on the 07 chassis as its structural base. The 100th chassis produced (numbered 99 as the manufacturer skipped number 13) was delivered to Cool Racing for the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans.
