section:team
Jackie Chan DC Racing is a racing team co-owned by actor Jackie Chan and driver David Cheng, notable for winning the LMP2 class at the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team currently competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship, with plans to return to the IMSA SportsCar Championship.

Founding story

David Cheng, a two-time Asian Le Mans Series champion, formed DC Racing in 2015. The team was initially based in Wuhan and employed personnel from OAK Racing, with whom Cheng had previously raced. Remy Brouard, from OAK Racing, served as team principal. DC Racing began as a partnership with Eurasia Motorsport, competing in the LMP3 class of the Asian Le Mans Series with a Ligier JS P3, driven by Cheng, Ho-Pin Tung, and Thomas Laurent. This collaboration secured the Team Championship and an entry for the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In March 2015, Cheng met Jackie Chan, who expressed his passion for motorsports, inspired by the film Le Mans. Following Cheng’s performance at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, Chan proposed co-owning a racing team for the 2016 season, leading to the formation of Jackie Chan DC Racing.

Technology lineage

For the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship season, the team partnered with Signatech Alpine, entering the series under the Baxi DC Racing Alpine banner. They fielded rebadged Oreca 05 chassis as Alpine A460s in the LMP2 class. In subsequent seasons, the team utilized the Oreca 07 chassis, continuing their focus on LMP2 competition. In 2017, the team partnered with Jota Sport.

Driver relationships

Key drivers for Jackie Chan DC Racing have included David Cheng, Ho-Pin Tung, Thomas Laurent, Gustavo Menezes, Alex Brundle, Tristan Gommendy, and Oliver Jarvis. The driver lineups varied across series and seasons, with Tung, Laurent, and Menezes competing in the Asian Le Mans Series, while Cheng, Brundle, and Gommendy, along with Tung, Laurent, and Jarvis, represented the team in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Historic peaks and collapses

The team achieved its most significant success at the 2017 24 Hours of Le Mans. The No. 38 car, driven by Ho-Pin Tung, Thomas Laurent, and Oliver Jarvis, led overall laps – a first for an LMP2 car at Le Mans – and ultimately finished second overall, winning the LMP2 class. This marked the first time a Chinese team had won a class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The No. 37 car finished fourth overall, later being promoted to third after the disqualification of another team.

In 2020, Jackie Chan DC Racing withdrew from all motorsports competition, citing personal and financial issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Team owner David Cheng stated in March 2022, as quoted in Autosport, that the decision was largely due to the need to focus on the family business based in Wuhan.

Current status

As of 2023, Jackie Chan DC Racing continues to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, fielding the No. 37 Oreca 07 with drivers Ho-Pin Tung, Gabriel Aubry, and Will Stevens. The team also has plans to return to the IMSA SportsCar Championship.
